Nyein began its work in 2000. Since it began, Nyein’s mission has been to build a sustainable peace with justice. As such, the Foundation places a priority on achieving an inclusive peace process and emphasizes the central importance of public participation.
In 2016, Nyein became increasingly engaged in coordination work between the new government, the public and ethnic armed organizations (EAOs). The Foundation was able to achieve this important work thanks to the trust and long-standing relationships it had built with government, EAOs and all parties. Nyein Foundation believes that creating space for the involvement of all will be a great support for forward movement both inside and outside of the formal peace process. Its work for positive inclusion has seen important steps such as the increased involvement of communities through civilian peace support mechanisms. Nyein is spearheading research and data collection among communities to further ensure the voices of everyone are heard. And it is working for policy change in areas where some existing government policies are not conducive to the potential for peace.
Finally, we remain committed and determined to pursue our mission to work with all stakeholders in our society to achieve peace more than six decades of armed conflict that has been taking place from 1948 to present. Our Vision, as ever, is to see a just and peaceful society for all the peoples in Myanmar; a society that practices good governance and fosters a culture that rejects violence as a method for dealing with difference.
